8 Under The Radar WordPress SEO Plugins

WordPress SEO Plugins

Highly Recommended WordPress SEO Plugins

If you’ve ever spent time optimizing a WordPress site, you know the right plugins can make a huge difference in how well your site performs, not just in terms of features, but also when it comes to SEO.

From plugins that handle on-page optimization and structured data, to those that manage redirects, image compression, and site speed, WordPress has no shortage of tools promising better rankings. But here’s the thing: people can get carried away.

While there are trusted and reliable plugins that help with running an SEO-friendly site, using too many of them or the wrong ones can do more harm than good.

SEO is no longer just about keywords and backlinks. Google’s algorithm has evolved to take user experience into account, and that means your site’s speed, mobile usability, and technical cleanliness are all part of the ranking equation. Good plugins can help you with all of that. They can generate proper schema markup, automatically handle meta tags, create clean sitemaps, manage 404 errors with smart redirects, and help you build a rock-solid internal linking structure.

That being said, some plugins load unnecessary CSS or JavaScript on every page, even if it’s only needed on specific posts. Others might make additional database calls or conflict with existing theme functionality. It all adds up.

A slow site can negatively impact both user experience and SEO.

The goal should be to find that sweet spot, run a handful of reliable plugins that handle the heavy lifting without slowing you down. It’s all about balance. Choose quality over quantity, and remember that fewer, smarter tools will usually get you further than stacking your site with every SEO or performance add-on you can find.

In the rest of this article, I’ll walk through eight WordPress plugins that are actually worth your time. Plugins that I like and use often.

Let’s get into it.

1. Rank Math SEO Plugin

By RankMath

In my opinion, Rank Math has emerged as a top SEO plugin for WordPress. Everyone has their favorites, but most SEO professionals that I talk to consider it superior to Yoast SEO and All-in-One SEO (AIOSEO).

Rank Math offers an extensive array of features, many of which are available in its free version. These include support for multiple focus keywords, advanced schema markup, 404 error monitoring, and a built-in redirection manager.

In contrast, Yoast SEO and AIOSEO often reserve similar functionalities for their premium versions, requiring additional payments for features like multiple keyword optimization and advanced schema support. Until this changes, Rank Math is my go-to SEO plugin.

Rank Math SEO Plugin

Rank Math has a clean and modern interface that integrates seamlessly with the WordPress dashboard, providing real-time SEO analysis and suggestions as users create content. This ease of use contrasts with the more segmented and sometimes overwhelming interfaces of Yoast SEO and AIOSEO.

Rank Math includes advanced tools such as Content AI, which provides AI-driven suggestions to optimize content for better search engine rankings. Additionally, its modular framework allows users to enable or disable features based on their specific needs, ensuring optimal performance without unnecessary bloat. While AIOSEO and Yoast SEO offer some advanced tools, they often come at an additional cost and may not provide the same level of customization.

One of the most significant advantages is its value proposition. The free version is feature-rich, often surpassing the capabilities of the free versions of Yoast SEO and AIOSEO. For users requiring more advanced features, Rank Math’s premium plans are competitively priced, offering unlimited site usage at a lower cost compared to the per-site pricing models of its competitors.

2. Internal Links Manager

By webraketen

If you’re managing a WordPress site, you know that internal linking is crucial for SEO and user experience. However, manually adding links can be time-consuming and prone to errors. That’s where the Internal Links Manager plugin comes into play.

The Internal Links Manager plugin allows you to automate the process of linking specific keywords to desired URLs across your website. By specifying a keyword and its corresponding URL, the plugin automatically creates links whenever that keyword appears in your content. This not only saves time but also ensures consistency in your internal linking strategy.

Links Manager Plugin

One of the significant benefits of this plugin is its ability to improve user experience. By providing readers with relevant links, you keep them engaged and encourage them to explore more of your content. This increased engagement can lead to longer session durations and lower bounce rates, both of which are positive signals to search engines.

From an SEO perspective, internal linking helps distribute link equity throughout your site, allowing search engines to better understand the structure and hierarchy of your content. The Internal Links Manager plugin facilitates this by ensuring that important pages receive the necessary internal links to boost their visibility in search results.

Additionally, the plugin offers customization options such as setting the number of times a keyword should be linked on a page, choosing whether links open in a new tab, and deciding if the links should be nofollow. These features give you control over how internal links behave, aligning them with your overall SEO strategy.

In summary, the Internal Links Manager plugin is a valuable tool for anyone looking to streamline their internal linking process. By automating link creation, enhancing user experience, and supporting SEO efforts, it serves as an essential component in optimizing your WordPress website.

3. Schema Pro

By wpschema.com

Schema Pro is a powerful WordPress plugin designed to simplify the implementation of structured data on your website. By automating the addition of schema markup, you enhance your site’s visibility in search engine results, resulting in improved click-through rates and enhanced SEO performance.

One of the standout features of Schema Pro is its user-friendly interface, which allows you to add schema markup without any coding knowledge. It supports a wide range of schema types, including articles, reviews, local businesses, services, courses, recipes, and job postings. This versatility ensures that various content types on your website are accurately represented in search results, potentially leading to rich snippets that attract more visitors.

SEo Schema Pro

Schema Pro also offers dynamic field mapping, enabling you to pull data from existing custom fields or metadata. This feature ensures consistency and accuracy across your site, as the schema markup automatically updates with your content. Additionally, the plugin provides options to control where and how schema is applied, giving you flexibility to tailor the structured data to specific pages or posts.

When it comes to compatibility, Schema Pro works seamlessly with popular SEO plugins like Rank Math. While Rank Math includes its own schema functionality, using Schema Pro in conjunction with it can further enhance your site’s structured data capabilities. For instance, Schema Pro can handle complex schema types or specific customization needs that go beyond Rank Math’s built-in options.

4. WP Rocket

By wprocket.com

This plugin may come with some criticism, as it’s not an SEO plugin, nor does it directly aid in any SEO strategy; however, speed is a crucial factor.

Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, and a slow-loading site can hurt your SEO efforts before you even get a chance to show off your content. That’s where WP Rocket comes in handy. It’s a caching and performance optimization plugin built specifically for WordPress, and it can have a significant impact on both how fast your site loads and its search engine performance.

Unlike other caching plugins that require lots of fine-tuning, WP Rocket works almost immediately after installation. The plugin automatically applies 80% of recommended web performance best practices right out of the box. This includes page caching, browser caching, GZIP compression, and cross-device support, all of which contribute to significantly faster load times.

WP Rocket

WP Rocket goes beyond just caching.

It helps reduce the size and number of files your browser has to load, which directly aligns with Google’s Core Web Vitals — a set of metrics that measure real-world user experience. For example, WP Rocket can delay the loading of JavaScript files until user interaction (which improves interaction scores) and also minify and combine CSS and JS files. These adjustments don’t just improve speed; they help your site hit the specific benchmarks Google uses to evaluate site quality.

Another SEO-related benefit? WP Rocket helps you optimize your images by integrating with lazy loading. That means your images load only when they’re about to be viewed, rather than all at once. This reduces the initial payload and gets your content in front of users faster. Combined with image compression tools like Imagify (made by the same developers), you get a complete setup for performance-focused image handling.

However, despite my love for this plugin, you need to test which cache site can give you the best results. For years, I have used Super Cache and still have it installed on many of my sites. My advice to you is to test the top four or five cache plugins and run speed tests with PageSpeed Insights.

5. Website LLMs.txt Plugin

Created by SEO Ryan Howard

Website LLMs.txt is a free WordPress plugin designed to enhance your website’s visibility to Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. By automatically generating an llms.txt file—a structured list of your site’s key public URLs—it serves as an AI-optimized sitemap, guiding AI systems to discover and interpret your content more effectively.

What is LLMS?

Website LLMs.txt offers a straightforward and efficient solution for enhancing your site’s compatibility with AI models. Automating the creation and management of an AI-optimized sitemap ensures that your content is more discoverable and accurately represented in AI-driven platforms. Whether you’re running a blog, e-commerce store, or portfolio site, integrating this plugin can be a valuable step toward future-proofing your online presence in the evolving landscape of AI-assisted web interaction.

Multisite Support: Supports WordPress Multisite environments, allowing each site within the network to generate and manage its own llms.txt file independently.

6. All 404 Redirect to Homepage Plugin

By wp-buy

Ok, hear me out… The All 404 Redirect to Homepage plugin is not something you install and keep forever, but it does help in a pinch.

The reason this is a great plugin is that it puts out the fire if someone deletes a bunch of pages without properly redirecting them. This plugin redirects all 404 error pages to the home page and logs the pages, along with their corresponding visit counts. You can enable this plugin, and it’ll quickly resolve a significant issue.

You can then go back and add redirects to direct the broken pages to their intended destinations.

404 Error Plugin

This easy-to-use tool automatically detects and manages unexpected 404 errors on your WordPress site, redirecting broken or missing URLs to your homepage or a custom page of your choice using a proper 301 SEO redirect.

404 errors can hurt your search engine rankings and frustrate users, but this plugin offers a clean, automated solution. Instead of leaving visitors stuck on a dead-end page, it seamlessly guides them to relevant content, helping reduce bounce rates, improve user experience, and maintain your site’s SEO health. Whether you’re dealing with outdated links, deleted pages, or typo-filled URLs, this plugin ensures your site stays polished, user-friendly, and search engine–ready.

7. Imagify

By WP Media

Imagify is a powerful image compression WordPress plugin developed by the same team behind WP Rocket. It’s built to automatically optimize your images without sacrificing quality, helping your site load faster and rank better in search engines.

Image optimization is a must for SEO and one of the most overlooked aspects. High-resolution photos might look great, but if they aren’t optimized, they can seriously slow down your site. Page speed is a confirmed ranking factor in Google’s algorithm, particularly on mobile devices.

Imagify steps in by compressing your images as soon as you upload them to your WordPress media library. It supports standard formats like JPG, PNG, WebP, and even PDF files, reducing their size while maintaining their visual crispness.

Imagify offers three levels of compression: Normal, Aggressive, and Ultra—giving you flexibility depending on your priorities. Normal keeps the highest image quality with subtle reductions in file size, while Ultra pushes for maximum compression. Regardless of your choice, Imagify allows you to back up the original image so you can always revert if needed. This safety net is crucial for site owners who value visuals but want to optimize performance.

Another great feature is bulk optimization. If you already have a library full of uncompressed images, you don’t need to manually optimize them one by one. With just a few clicks, Imagify can go through your entire media library and shrink your images in the background. It even integrates with other popular plugins, such as WooCommerce and NextGEN Gallery, making it ideal for e-commerce stores and portfolio sites.

From an SEO standpoint, the benefits are twofold: faster load times improve user experience and reduce bounce rate, while Google rewards speed and efficiency with higher rankings. Faster-loading images also mean better performance scores on tools like PageSpeed Insights and Core Web Vitals.

Imagify also supports WebP conversion, allowing you to serve modern image formats that are significantly lighter than JPEG or PNG. Serving WebP images to supported browsers gives you a serious edge in performance without changing the image experience for your visitors.

In short, Imagify is one of the smartest ways to improve your SEO by addressing a part of your site that’s often forgotten: image weight. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and delivers visible results—literally.

8. Surfer SEO Plugin

By Sufer SEO

If you’re serious about on-page SEO and content performance, the Surfer SEO plugin is a game-changer worth having in your WordPress toolkit. While Surfer is primarily known as a cloud-based SEO platform, their WordPress integration brings the power of their Content Editor directly into your dashboard, making it easier than ever to optimize your content while you write.

The Surfer SEO plugin connects your WordPress site to your Surfer account, allowing you to pull in live optimization guidelines for any keyword or phrase. These guidelines are built using real-time SERP analysis. Surfer looks at the top-ranking pages for your target keyword and then provides specific benchmarks you should aim for: word count, number of headings, image count, keyword usage, and even semantically related terms.

Sufer SEO

One of the most useful features is the content score, a real-time measure of how well your post is optimized for search engines. As you write or update content, Surfer gives instant feedback on your score, helping you fine-tune your copy for maximum SEO potential. This makes it incredibly efficient to update underperforming posts and ensure new ones are built for success from the outset.

For some, this is very valuable as they learn SEO on the go. It eliminates the guesswork when creating content.

Another standout feature is the ability to generate keyword and topic suggestions. Surfer doesn’t just focus on one primary keyword, it suggests related keywords and phrases that commonly appear in top-ranking pages, helping you cover the topic more completely. This creates semantically rich content that both users and search engines love. In an era where Google prioritizes topical authority and user intent alignment, this provides a clear edge.

The plugin also enables collaboration with writers or content teams by assigning guidelines and tracking who is working on what. For agencies or businesses producing content at scale, this workflow integration is a significant time-saver.
