The Best Free SEO Chrome Extensions Worth Actually Installing

Best Free SEO Chrome Extensions

Most lists of SEO Chrome extensions are written by people who have never used them in a real workflow. They round up every extension with “SEO” in the name, add a sentence of description, and call it a guide. You end up installing six tools, using none of them consistently, and wondering why your browser is slow. After 14 years of doing SEO work across local Vancouver businesses and national clients, I have a short list of Chrome extensions that actually earn a permanent spot in my browser. Some are well-known. Some are not. This article covers the ones I actually use, why I use them, and what each one is good for.

I also built one myself. It is free, it has no tracking, and it does one job well. More on that below.

What Makes a Chrome Extension Worth Keeping

Before getting into the list, a quick framework. A Chrome extension earns a permanent install if it does at least one of the following: It surfaces information you would otherwise have to dig for manually. It saves meaningful time on tasks you do repeatedly. It works without requiring a paid subscription for core functionality.

Most extensions fail the third test immediately. They offer a “free tier” that gives you 3 uses per day, then a wall. For occasional research, that might be acceptable. For daily SEO work, it is just annoying.

Every extension on this list is genuinely free for its core functionality.

Detailed SEO Extension

Detailed SEO Extension

Try it out here

This is the extension I would recommend if you want one tool that covers the most ground without paying anything. Detailed has over 450,000 users and has been actively maintained for years. That track record matters because extensions that stop getting updated break quietly and give you bad data.

What it does well: meta tags and heading structure displayed cleanly, schema markup visualization, internal and external link counts, and quick access links to open the current page in Ahrefs, Moz, Google Search Console, and several other tools. That last feature alone saves a meaningful amount of time if you frequently jump between tools.

One thing worth knowing: Detailed does not show domain authority or backlink counts in the free version. For authority metrics on a page you are researching, you will need a separate tool. But for on-page signals, it is thorough and reliable.

Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

If you have an Ahrefs subscription, this extension is a no-brainer. It overlays SEO data directly on Google search results, showing domain rating, URL rating, estimated traffic, and backlink counts for each result. For competitive research, being able to view that data without opening a separate tab for each result saves significant time.

The catch is that this tool requires an active Ahrefs plan to show meaningful data. Without a subscription, you get a stripped-down version that is not worth installing. If you already pay for Ahrefs, install this. If you are not, skip it and use one of the other options.

Keywords Everywhere

Keywords Everywhere

Try It Here

Keywords Everywhere is the extension I recommend to business owners who are doing their own basic keyword research. It overlays search volume data, cost-per-click estimates, and related keyword suggestions directly on Google search results pages, Google Search Console, and a handful of other platforms.

The pricing is credits-based rather than subscription-based. You buy a block of credits, and they do not expire. For a small business owner doing occasional keyword research, $10 worth of credits lasts a long time. For an agency doing daily research, it is not a replacement for a proper keyword tool, but it is a useful supplemental layer.

The feature I find most useful is the “Related Keywords” and “People Also Search For” panels, which appear on the right side of Google search results. When you are trying to understand what else people search alongside a primary term, having that data surface automatically without opening a separate tool changes how you read search results.

SEO Minion

Try It Here

SEO Minion is a multifunction tool that performs several tasks competently without excelling at any of them. The features I use regularly: on-page SEO checks (title, meta, headings, alt text), broken link checking directly on a page, and the “People Also Ask” multilevel export from Google SERPs.

That last feature is the reason it stays in my browser. People Also Ask boxes on Google SERPs contain valuable intent data. SEO Minion lets you expand every PAA box automatically and export the questions, which is genuinely useful when you are mapping out content that needs to cover a topic thoroughly. For a local SEO article targeting “physiotherapist Burnaby” or “accountant White Rock,” understanding the questions people are asking around that topic shapes how you structure the content.

The broken link checker is also useful for a quick crawl of a page before publishing. It highlights broken links directly on the page in red, which is faster than running a full site crawl for a single page check.

META SEO Inspector

This extension is more specialized than the others, but it is invaluable for technical SEO work. META SEO Inspector surfaces information that other extensions either miss or summarize too broadly: Open Graph tags, Twitter Card tags, canonical accuracy, hreflang implementation, structured data, and the scripts running on the page.

For most small business owners, this level of detail is more than you need day to day. But if you have ever published a page only to find it shares incorrectly on LinkedIn because the Open Graph image is misconfigured, or discovered that your canonical tag is pointing to a different URL than intended, META SEO Inspector is the fastest way to catch those issues without touching source code.

It is also the extension I reach for when auditing a site I have not worked with before. The first pass through a client site in White Rock or Burnaby almost always turns up misconfigured meta tags that have been sitting unnoticed for months.

Mangools SEO Extension

Mangools offers a suite of paid SEO tools, and its Chrome extension is the free entry point to that ecosystem. Install it, and you get key metrics surfaced on any page you visit: domain authority, page authority, backlink counts, and the top keywords the page ranks for. That last feature is the one that earns it a spot in a regular workflow. Seeing which keywords a competitor page is ranking for without opening a separate tool changes how quickly you can assess a SERP.

The extension also integrates with SERPChecker, which lets you pull localized search results for any location directly from the extension. For a Vancouver business owner trying to understand what actually appears when someone in Burnaby or White Rock searches for their service, that local SERP simulation is genuinely useful.

The honest limitation is that the deeper data requires a Mangools subscription. The free extension gives you enough to be useful for quick research, but if you find yourself wanting to dig further, you are being funnelled toward a paid plan. That is a reasonable model. Just go in knowing what the free tier covers and what it does not, so you are not surprised when a wall appears mid-audit.

Broken Link Checker

Try It Here

A broken link on your website is a small problem that compounds quietly. Visitors hit a dead end. Google’s crawler follows the link, finds nothing, and logs the error. Internal links that point to deleted or renamed pages bleed authority into a void instead of passing it to a live page. None of this announces itself. It just sits there costing you, invisibly.

The Broken Link Checker extension for Chrome finds broken links on any page you are currently viewing. Click the icon, and it scans every link on the page and flags anything returning a 4xx or 5xx status code. Broken links highlight in red directly on the page, so you can see exactly where the problem sits without cross-referencing a separate report.

For WordPress sites that have gone through any kind of restructuring, a plugin change, or a URL update without proper redirects in place, running this extension across your key pages takes ten minutes and almost always turns something up. Service pages, blog posts that link to older content, and navigation menus are the places to check first.

It is not a replacement for a full site crawl using Screaming Frog or a similar tool. But for a fast page-level check before publishing or after making changes, it does the job without any setup required.

…Humble Brag

SEO Snapshot by Ethical Champ

I built this one. Yes, I’m writing an article and stuffing my Chrome extension in it, but it’s really good! lol

SEO Snapshot audits any webpage in seconds. Click the extension icon, and you get a clean breakdown of the on-page SEO signals that matter most: title tag, meta description, heading structure (H1 through H6), canonical tag, robots meta, internal links, image alt text coverage, and basic technical flags. No login required. No usage limits. No data collection.

Quick Details:

  • Highlights all the headings on the page (h1,h2, h3, etc)
  • Color all the links on the page
    • Orange – Internal Link
    • Blue – External Link DoFollow
    • Red – Exxternal Link NoFollow
  • Page Meta
  • Page Keyword Density

The reason I built it is that I was doing a lot of quick page assessments, whether for my own client sites, competitor research, or reviewing a page before publishing, and every other tool either required an account, had a paywall on the useful features, or showed me 40 data points when I needed 10. SEO Snapshot shows you what you actually need for a fast on-page audit and nothing more.

For small business owners who want to check their own pages without hiring anyone, this is a reasonable starting point. Open a page, click the icon, and you will immediately see whether your title tag is the right length, whether you have an H1, and whether your images have alt text. Those three things alone catch the majority of on-page issues on local business sites. I wrote an article on it, you can read more here.

Extensions to Skip

A few extensions that appear on most lists and are not worth your time:

  • MozBar: The free version shows almost nothing useful since Moz moved their meaningful metrics behind a paywall. The paid version is fine, but if you are paying for Moz already, their own tools are more useful than the extension.
  • Ubersuggest: Limited to 40 searches per day on the free tier. For anything consistent, it runs out quickly. The paid version starts at $29 per month for a tool that overlaps with what Keywords Everywhere does for a fraction of the cost.
  • SimilarWeb: Useful for traffic estimates on large sites where the data sample is meaningful. For local businesses or smaller sites, the traffic estimates are unreliable and regularly misleading.

Building a Workflow Around These Tools

The mistake most people make with SEO Chrome extensions is installing ten of them and using none consistently. A better approach is to pick two or three that cover your actual use cases and learn them well.

For a small business owner managing their own site, SEO Snapshot and Keywords Everywhere cover the majority of what you need. Snapshot tells you whether your pages are set up correctly on-page. Keywords Everywhere gives you search demand context when you are writing new content or updating existing pages.

For an in-house marketer or agency doing more rigorous work, add Detailed SEO Extension for a comprehensive on-page view, Redirect Path for technical checks, and SEO Minion for content research. That five-extension stack covers on-page analysis, technical auditing, and keyword intent research without overlapping significantly.

None of these tools replaces a proper SEO audit or a strategic approach to your search visibility. They make the execution faster and catch issues that would otherwise go unnoticed. The strategy behind what you are building still needs to come first.

FAQ

  • What is the best free SEO Chrome extension? For most users, the Detailed SEO Extension is the strongest all-around free option. It covers on-page signals, heading structure, schema markup, and link data in one clean interface with no usage limits. For a faster, more focused audit of on-page signals, SEO Snapshot by Ethical Champ does the job in seconds with no account required.
  • Do SEO Chrome extensions slow down your browser? Some do, particularly extensions that run automatically on every page you visit. To keep performance manageable, install only the extensions you use regularly and consider disabling the others rather than keeping them active at all times. Extensions that only activate when you click them have minimal impact on browser performance.
  • Can Chrome extensions replace a full SEO audit? No. Chrome extensions are fast-check tools. They surface obvious issues and give you a quick read on a page’s signals. A proper SEO audit covers site architecture, crawl data, indexation status, content gaps, backlink profile, and competitive positioning, none of which a browser extension can fully assess. Use extensions for quick checks and point-in-time analysis, not as a substitute for comprehensive review.
  • Which Chrome extension is best for local SEO? For local SEO specifically, the combination of SEO Minion (for People Also Ask research) and SEO Snapshot (for on-page audit) covers the most relevant ground. Local SEO also depends heavily on Google Business Profile, citations, and reviews, which are not areas Chrome extensions can meaningfully assess.
  • Is the SEO Snapshot extension really free? Yes. There are no credits, no usage limits, no login, and no data collection. It was built to do one job and do it without the friction that comes with most freemium tools.
  • How many SEO Chrome extensions should I have installed? As few as possible. Two to four extensions that cover your actual workflow is better than ten that overlap and create confusion. Identify the tasks you do repeatedly and find the one extension that handles each task best. Everything else is noise.
