AI Content Grader: A Free WordPress Plugin That Scores How Human Your Writing Sounds
I’ll be honest with you, I built this plugin because I kept seeing the same thing over and over again on client sites. Someone had clearly copied a ChatGPT response, pasted it straight into WordPress, and hit publish. You can spot it instantly. The writing is technically correct, but somehow lifeless. Every sentence is the same length. Not a contraction in sight. “It’s worth noting that leveraging a holistic approach will seamlessly drive sustainable growth.”
Yeah. We’ve all seen it.
AI Content Grader is my attempt to give WordPress users a quick, honest answer to the question: Does this sound like a human wrote it?
So what does it actually do?
You install it, open a post, and start writing. That’s it. No signup, no settings page, no API key to dig out. The plugin watches your content as you type and gives it a score out of 100. A low score means you’re writing like a person. High score means you’re writing like a robot having an existential crisis.
It checks for the obvious stuff, words like “delve”, “leverage”, and “synergy” that nobody says out loud but somehow end up in every AI-generated article ever written. But it also catches the sneakier signals. Em dashes are a big one. I noticed Claude uses them constantly, far more than any human writer would. Three or four em dashes in a single article? That’s a red flag in my book.
It also looks at the rhythm of your sentences. AI writing tends to flow at a steady pace throughout, with every sentence roughly the same length and every paragraph roughly the same structure. Human writing is messier than that. We write short, punchy sentences. Then a longer one that builds on the previous point and adds some context. Then maybe something really brief. AI doesn’t do that naturally.
Who’s it actually useful for?
Honestly? Mostly SEO people. If you’re doing content audits for clients, spotting AI slop used to mean reading everything yourself. Now you can open a page, check the score in about three seconds, and show the client exactly which paragraphs need work. That’s saved me a lot of time already.
It’s also good if you use AI in your own writing process. I do, I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But I use it for research and rough drafts, then rewrite everything in my own voice. This plugin helps me check I’ve actually done that properly before I publish.
One thing worth knowing
Everything runs in your browser. Your content never gets sent anywhere. There’s no server crunching your words in the background, no data being stored. I wanted it to be something people could actually trust, so I kept the whole thing local.
It’s free, available in the WordPress plugin directory, and takes about 30 seconds to install. Give it a go and see how your writing scores.
Where can I get it?
I’ve submitted the WordPress Plugin, and I’m currently waiting for approval
