What is Link Building?

Link Building is the process of creating inbound links to a website. Search engines rank websites with more authority if they have respected links pointing their way. Link Building is a popular and effective, yet difficult strategy when it comes to search engine optimization.

Building links can be done by getting reciprocal links in e-zines, newsletters, directories, search engines, blogs etc. The more popular and important a website is, the more links from that site matter to the search engines. Getting lots of topic-specific links to your websites niche is also important which will earn trust and authority with the engines, namely Google.

One of the strongest factors search engines use in rankings is the anchor text, the word in which that is linked. If dozens of links point to a page with a specific keyword, that word or phrase has a very good probability of ranking well in search engines. You want to avoid linking “click here” and “leave,” and try and get prime keywords linked back to a website.

There are no types of links: Follow (or Do-Follow) and No-Follow.

When Google crawls a website looking over the content, it will pay close attention to any links with a “dofollow” attribute and exclude or reduce the amount of link credit from that page to any links with a “nofollow” attribute.

When they search engine spiders come across a site with a nofollow link, they will see it but not respond and go to visit where that link is directing, but when they come across a dofollow link, they will respond and follow that link. It is important to have a balance of each number of links dofollow and follow when putting together a link building campaign.
